Report: Rockets deal Dorian Finney-Smith to Hornets

Charlotte adds a veteran 3-point shooting threat in a reported swap with Houston.

Forward Dorian Finney-Smith is on the move from Houston to Charlotte, per reports.

In a swap reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Rockets are sending Finney-Smith and a trio of second-round picks to the Hornets. It is not known what Houston receives in the deal, but Charania reports the trade adds roster flexibility to Houston’s ledger.

Last season, Finney-Smith averaged 3.3 ppg, 2.5 rpg and 1 apg in 16.8 mpg with the Rockets, appearing in 37 games. The 10-year veteran spent most of his career with the Dallas Mavericks (2016-23), but also played for the Brooklyn Nets (2023-25) and Los Angeles Lakers (2024-25).

The Rockets have made some moves on the periphery to their team, reportedly bringing back forward Tari Eason on a five-year deal, while also picking up Bogdan Bogdanović and Marcus Smart in other reported deals.

The Hornets made one of the big splashes in the offseason by reportedly trading star guard LaMelo Ball to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Naz Reid. Charlotte also dealt athletic forward Miles Bridges to the Phoenix Suns in a separate reported trade (and got Grayson Allen and Royce O’Neale in return).

Finney-Smith provides the Hornets with another veteran who has been a capable 3-point shooter in his career. He shot 27% on 3-pointers in 2025-26 — his lowest of his career — but overall is a 35.9% 3-point shooter. He has appeared in 44 playoff games and was a vital contributor and starter for the Dallas Mavericks during their run to the 2022 NBA Finals.
